Welcome everyone. This website shares with you some cultural aspects such as family kinship,

ancestral  stories, songs,  paintings, designs and  land of the Gupapuyngu  people  (one of the

Australian  Indigenous  clan  nations).  In  2008  some  Gupapuyngu  people  at  Milingimbi and

Ramingining  along  with  their  cultural  custodians  and Yasunori Hayashi (a Masters student at

Charles  Darwin  University)  began  working  on  this  website  in  order  to  facilitate  the  digital

accessibility  of  Gupapuyngu  culture  for  future  generations  of  Gupapuyngu  and  other clan.

This website is written in Gupapuyngu language and other Yolngu (generic term for Indigenous

people of Northeast Arnhem Land) languages, so it is accessible to Yolngu people. Gupapuyngu

families wish to share their cultural knowledge with the people of the world, and in acknowledge-

ment of this,  this  website has  been  translated into both  English and Japanese.  It contains a 

variety of  perspectives of the  various people  involved in the projects.  It is not intended to be

exhaustive or definitive.

Gupapuyngu and other Yolngu languages  have 31 sounds. Some  of  them  are  the same as

English  and  others are different,  such as the  retroflexed sounds (d, l, n, t). Please be aware

that the English version of this website spells Yolngu words with the English alphabet  (not the

full Yolngu alphabet) so the resulting pronunciation may not be correct.

先住民グループの1つ)が保有する文化を紹介するものです。全てではありませんが、いくつかの親族

関係、祖先の物語、歌、絵画、土地が解説されています。将来、グパプユング及び他グループの新しい

世代が彼らの文化と教養をこのウェブサイトから少しでも学ぶ事ができればという思いから、2008年より

グパプユングの人々、彼らの文化保護者、そしてチャールズ・ダーウィン大学修士課程在籍の林靖典が

ウェブサイト作成を開始しました。北東アーネム・ランドの人々が学び、理解できる事を目的に、ウェブ

サイト上の言語はグパプユングの言語及びその他のヨルング語(北東アーネム・ランドに暮らす先住民

が用いる複数の言語総称)が用いられています。また、世界に暮らす多くの人々にグパプユングの文化

を共有したいという、彼らの思いにより、日本語と英語での翻訳が可能になりました。また、ウェブサイト

の内容に関してはプロジェクトに参加した人々の複数の見解が表現されています。
